Poms " AGARed "! A Star is BORN !

" Agar is like a Squatter you can't get rid of him " !

Poms " AGARed " when they were expecting an early lunch , as they thought they wrapped up the Aussie batting CHEAPLY !

STAND UP AUSTRALIA , there is a New Sports Star about to take the stage !

So many records batted into touch , by the Tailend Batting efforts , of Ashton Agar and Phillip Hughes !

In his First Test batting effort , Ashton Agar has broken so many records , that his name will be long remembered , even if he does nothing more in this Test ! Nearly " stumped " , in his first minutes at the crease  , he and Hughes , turned a dismal Aussie effort , into a BRILLIANT Display of " Tailend Batting "!

Phillip Hughes also had some good fortune , as he batted his way to 81 not out with 9 fours , thus being the second best batsman in this first innings . As a partnership , Ashton and Phillip , took Oz from the dismal period of 108 for 4 to 118 for 9 , then onto the respectable 280 all out . During this period , England's elation , at a CHEAP dismissal of the Aussies evaporated . Midday hopes of nearly a 95 run lead became a mid afternoon dismay , of seeking to recover lost ground of 65 runs .

ASHTON AGAR : Bio :
Left-arm orthodox spin bowler
Age: 19. Tests: None
Agar, who moved from Melbourne to Perth to further his career, was plucked from obscurity after making his first class debut in January to play two games for Australia on this year's tour of India.
He is currently studying law at the Murdoch University in Perth.
Well fancy that: Agar's mother is a Sri Lankan whose family emigrated to Australia when she was 12.

PHIL HUGHES : Bio :
Left-handed batsman
Age: 24. Tests: 24. Batting average: 33.00
His shuffling batting stance dismays purists but despite the flawed technique, Hughes burst on to the test scene with a dream debut series in South Africa in 2009.
But the 24-test-old left-handed batsman has failed to convert the early promise into runs and his meagre batting average of 33 underlines his hot and cold career.
Well fancy that: Hughes's father Greg is a banana and cattle farmer in Macksville, New South Wales

Like so many other Aussies , i took a look at the Eurosport Cricket report , after stopping my morning bike ride and disgustedly went looking for something else to amuse me whilst i ate lunch ! Riding the bike ( hammering out the miles ) in the morning and watching " Le Tour ( another day , another CRASH ) " in the afternoon has become the norm ( not Norm the Couch potato ) in recent days .

Whilst Ashton has been bemusing the Test Fans , Ricky Ponting , now retired from Test Cricket but playing his LAST INNINGS in 1st Class County Cricket , was busy smashing an Innings of 169 Runs ! Good on yer DIGGER ! Thanks for the memories !

Below is the Eurosport Cricket summary of what took place today , from the dismissal of James Pattison for 2 runs to the finish of the Aussie batting :

NB : Read from the bottom to get a sense of England's frustration and the ascendency of Ashton and Phillip to a place in the Record Books !

MP:
Australia 280  (64.5 overs) – END OF SOMETHING SPECIAL – Agar looks to heave at a short ball from Broad, makes a good contact, but Swann is lurking in the deep, and takes the catch. England celebrate, but make sure to congratulate him. What an innings. Agar c Swann b Broad 98(101). Ball-by-ball commentary here
14:54
ICC@cricketiccAshton Agar falls for 98, misses out on a dramatic debut Test hundred. Australia leads by 65 runs #Ashes #EngvAus
14:53
MP:
Astonishing stuff - I thought he'd hit it cleanly enough to get his hundred.

Comment From And1
Have to say this is a bit dismal but the extra pressure on the England Batsmen might do them some good#
14:51
MP:
In the middle of Agar-watch it would be easy to overlook that Australia have been scoring at  a run a ball since lunch.
14:51

Comment From Rog
England have history against no. 11 Tino Best?
14:50

Comment From Telaw
I said earlier that this batting is maybe why Agar was picked above Nathan Lyons. Lehman knew something.
14:49
OptaJim@OptaJim96 - Ashton Agar's unbeaten 96 lifts him above @tinobest at the top of the list of highest scores by a Test number 11. Promotion.
14:48
ICC@cricketiccAshton Agar has now registered the highest score ever by a number 11 batsman, going past Tino Best's 95 #ashes #EngvsAus
14:47
MP:
That's one interpretation!
14:47

Comment From Lucky Luke
Agar maybe doesnt seem very confident about his key role that is his bowling chances and hes trying to make the most of this innings.
14:47
MP:
Australia 275/9 (63 overs) – ROUGH HIM UP – Stuart Broad sets men back and bowls it short from around the wicket. Perhaps it will work, perhaps it won’t, but at least it’s a plan. But Agar survives it. Ball-by-ball commentary here
14:47
MP:
AGAR THE HIGHEST-SCORING NUMBER 11 IN TEST HISTORY

This young man has put everyone else to shame. He deserves his 100
14:42
MP:
And as journalist Kevin Mitchell put it on Twitter - if you don't want Agar to make it, you're bloodless. (But 100 is quite enough).
14:41

Looks like there is a century in the offing

Australia 271/9 (61 overs) – RECORD – The highest Test partnership. Ever. Broad tries a bouncer, and Agar ducks out of the way and grins. I’m not sure it’s sunk in quite how extraordinary this partnership is. Ball-by-ball commentary here

Broad's spell before lunch looked promising. We need more aggression.
14:33
OptaJim@OptaJim1 - @Gloscricket have declared on 562-5, one run short of their record total against @kentcricket (563 at Tunbridge Wells, 1934). Close.
14:32

Comment From LD
So far in this match the key sessions have all gone to Aus, it doesn't matter how much good work we do at the start of the day, if we then throw it away. Though the Aus may smile they need to look at themselves too. All round we've seen 4 sessions of quite poor cricket so far. Were this Zim v Ban we would be discussing their ejection from the test playing nations!
14:32
MP:
Or Daniel Vettori, for that matter...
14:32

Comment From aitch in Thailand
Could be watching the birth of a new Ritchie Benaud here ooh eck
14:32
MP:
Meantime Ricky Ponting is 122 not out for Surrey in what will be his final first-class innings. Unless he's handed a recall for Australia, of course... I've heard worse ideas.
14:31
MP:
Australia 262/9 (59.3 overs) – WHAT NOW? – Anderson getting a hint of shape but Hughes and Agar juts look so settled. The new ball just 20 overs away – if England get a chance to use it it could be game over by then. Australia now in front by 47. Ball-by-ball commentary here
14:29

Comment From Auzzie fan7
Hey england, lehman's secret weapon is a batsman at 11 and tell everyone he's a spinner lol
14:29

Comment From AussieJack
Some shabby bowling by England when Oz was on the rack which has mader Agar look good. Where is the short stuff from around the wicket that Hughes can't play?
14:27

Comment From aitce h in Thailand
Bledd ell men not out is not out, move on
14:27
MP:
LENGTHS: 31% full to Agar, 37% on a length, 33% short - therein lies the problem with England's approach. No plans for him, and it's been punished.
14:26

Comment From Rog
LD, for all Englands failings so far I think we will see the usual Aussie supporters response by the end of the 5th test. A la Melbourne when 40,000 disappeared when they went down 1-3
14:26
MP:
On the umpiring call - was it the wrong decision? Yes, I'd say so. But I can see why Erasmus didn't give it.
14:26
OptaJim@OptaJim10 - Hughes and Agar have set a new 10th wicket record partnership for Tests between @ECB_cricket and @CricketAus. Riposte.

He should have been out... he wasnt given out....just have to move on
14:25
MP:
Australia 253/9 (58 overs) – FLAMINGO – Agar has just hit Anderson through mid on one-legged, in a Pietersen-esque crunching stroke. 86 not out, 10 to go until the record score by a number 11, and an altogether bigger landmark awaiting him four runs after that... Ball-by-ball commentary here
14:23
MP:
That's not to take away from the rest of the innings, where he's been sensational. But still - we're looking at a very different game now.
14:22
MP:
For those of you who missed it - Agar was on six when it looked as if he had been stumped. I'd definitely have given it.
14:22

Comment From Bobito
The 3rd umpire howler at the start of Agar's innings could well be game changing. Australia should have been all out for 120 odd.
14:21

Australia 247/9 (57 overs) – NO LET-UP – Highest 10th-wicket stand for Australia in Tests, eclipsing a record set in 1924 – Agar, who’s eased on to 80 not out, is now the second-highest scorer by a number 11 ever. Ball-by-ball commentary here
14:18

Comment From LD
Flower needs to take a good hard look at himself I think. This bowing to tail enders has been an issue for a long time, so has the first innings of a series batting failure. He doesn't seem to have changed anything on either point. This happens way to often to be blamed on one specific player.

Comment From brasco
Dan get a grip ! You can have a go at the umpires as much as you want but at the end of the day the kid is still in and is smashing the England bowlers to all corners.

Comment From aitch in Thailand
No need to panic yet balmy army
14:11

Right - well here we go - Ashton Agar has had 40 minutes to digest what he's just accomplished - England have had 40 minutes to rethink their strategy - what will the afternoon bring?

Australia 229/9 (55 overs) – LUNCH – What to make of that session? England ripped Australia to shreds, then were undone by the number 11 batsman. From a lead of 100, England are now staring at a deficit of 14 and counting. It was thrilling, but deary me. Broad, bowling happily at 87-88mph, by the way, just to add to the confusion. Yes well Agar's innings is only continuing thanks to that disgraceful decision by Marais Erasmus. How is he an elite Test umpire?

Beefy is not amused. This is a farce. If Broad was fit to be on the field, why hasn't he bowled until now?? You have to question Cooks captaincy.

Australia 223/9 (52.4 overs) – CARNAGE – Phil Hughes adds a four with a smooth drive, then edges through a gap in the slip cordon for another four. Australia 203/9 (50.4 overs) – WHAT’S BROAD DOING? – Fielding on the boundary as Agar hoicks to midwicket. He winces as he throws in – what’s the point of him being there if he’s not going to bowl? Looks like he can only aggravate the injury. Ball-by-ball commentary here
13:13
MP:
This is likely to be Ashton Agar's first and last outing at 11 for Australia.
13:12

Well played Agar
13:09
MP:
Australia 192/9 (49 overs) – TAKE A BOW – Ashton Agar has done a terrific job here. A run-a-ball half-century on debut from 11, with his team in a hole. He edges Anderson away for two, but a controlled edge, low through third man. Whatever your side in this contest, this has been a wonderful innings. Ball-by-ball commentary here

England have liked four bowlers for a long time. It's usually been fine - but when one bowler goes lame, you can be exposed very quickly.
13:04

Comment From aitch in Thailand
Been spouting about this for an age now. To me the correct balance for a test side is 5 batsmen wicket and 5 bowlers. Or 4 bowler and a genuine all rounder
13:02
MP:
Very true. It should be a good day for batting, and only reverse swing should really be a danger - if the Australians can find any.
13:02

Comment From Telaw
On a positive note, this shows it's now a good batting wicket. If their No. 11 can score like this our openers should be looking at a ton apiece.
13:02

Comment From John Allen
How can we let this tail to wag,get thebig guns out!
12:59
MP:
Yep. It sounded to me like bruising and it was just a bit sore. Perhaps by the second innings it will be better. But for now, England are struggling for options.
12:59

Comment From LD
Seems that broad isn't really fit to bowl is he, otherwise finn would have been hauled off ages ago!
12:59

Comment From Regretable_Pork
Agar is like a squatter you can't get rid of him!
12:58

Comment From Derek, Philippines
Where is Anderson, if he is fit then bring him on. Even Broad with a bad shoulder could not be as bad as Swann
12:56
MP:
I don't know about that. The Aussies are in shot-a-ball mode, that could have been ugly too. He might have taken a chance on bowling Anderson earlier, though - despite a heavy workload, he's still only bowled 18 overs.
12:55

Comment From Rog
MP is this a case of Cook not being a proactive captain? With Finn fast losing us any decent lead should he not before now mixed it up by bowling Trott, Pieterson or Root?
12:55

Comment From Telaw
That bad call on the stumping is haunting us. Erasmus should be sent to the Tower of London.
12:55

Comment From aitch in Thailand
Line and length is the name of the game, my old skipper was always the man to give the ball back to the bowler. If you began to stray it came at you at 80mph. Focuses the mind.

MP:
Australia 178/9 (46 overs) – WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS – As this partnership threatens to undo all of England’s good work, England bring back James Anderson for what may be the last over before lunch. Ball-by-ball commentary here
12:53
OptaJim@OptaJim23 - @JimmyAnderson9 (312) is now the 23rd highest Test wicket taker. In this match he has passed L. Gibbs (309) and B.Lee (310). Climbing.

Comment From Telaw
Agar moves to 2nd highest of the innings. Perhaps he IS their secret weapon?
12:53

Comment From Farmer Christmas
Afternoon chaps...well I didn't expect to see this - the cheek of Agar! Who does he think he is - Shane Warne?
12:50
MP:
Finn has really let himself down here. Good batting from Agar, but not a lot of common sense from Finn on his lines and lengths.
12:50

Comment From LD
3 more runs and it's the best partnership of the match! We've said it time and time again but England really need to throw this "plan" they have for tail enders out the window and bowl at the dang stumps!
12:49

Comment From Justin Matiza
Come on finish this.
12:49
MP:
Bit of breaking news - Ricky Ponting, in his final first-class innings, has scored a century
12:48
MP:
Shoulder injury. Fit in theory, but in practice he hasn't been called upon and England could do with him.
12:48

Comment From Phil (bulgaria)
Is Broad injured, why has he not bowled?
12:48

Been waiting for that one. Concentrating too much on the jelly puns, but he just hasn't been wobbling enough.

MP:
Australia 169/9 (44 overs) – TEEN STAR – Agar now on 35 from as many balls courtesy of a delightful drive through the covers from Swann. Just as you think England have taken the initiative decisively, Australia do some damage limitation. Deficit is now just 46 runs. Ball-by-ball commentary here

Australia 162/9 (42.5 overs) – LESSONS NOT BEING LEARNT – The short ball is standing up to be hit, and Ashton Agar is hitting it. He’s got something about him for a 19-year-old on debut. Finn, by contrast, is not using his loaf. Ball-by-ball commentary here
12:39

Comment From Lucky Luke
do hope and pray Broad recovers speedily
12:39
MP:
He's not been great this morning but I think he bowled well last night. I think a bit depends on Broad. The temptation would be if he's not fit to drop him and pick Bresnan.

12:36
MP:
Australia 151/9 (41 overs) – AGAR SET – He’s doing a very decent job here, Agar. As some of our users have already pointed out, he’s making some of the regular batsmen look less than clever. Third-highest scorer in this innings. Ball-by-ball commentary here
12:32
MP:
Hyuk, hyuk, hyuk. There is a serious note behind this, though. This extra 30 runs has just taken a chunk out of England's advantage. See it through to lunch and suddently that lead which looked enormous will be a little less daunting...
12:31

Comment From Telaw
I agree with LD. After the poor performance by the batsmen yesterday the bowlers should have got Aus out for less than 100, leaving us a decent lead. They have let us down badly.
12:30
MP:
Marsh has had occasions where he has looked like the business. But he was all over the place in the home series against India, so you can see the hesitation in returning to him.

12:28
MP:
The side-on camera looked pretty conclusive. In Marais Erasmus' defence - it was less clear on the stumps-cam that Agar's foot had ever left the ground. But I'd have given it out.
12:28

Comment From cricketbob
That was out he lifted his foot !!
12:28

Comment From simon york
how could the 3rd umpire call that not out. on the freeze frame it was clear to see his foot had not gone beyond the the line. If big decisions are gonna be bottled we may as well go back to guesswork!
12:27
MP:
Australia 145/9 (38.5 overs) – NOT FINNISHED YET – Steven Finn returns, Agar is trusted with the strike and caresses a four through square. Useful little stand building here. Any extra runs will just take the gloss off England’s morning. Hughes continues with a pulled four in front of midwicket. Ball-by-ball commentary here

MP:
I saw mighty close - it looked out to me. The side-on view seemed to show the foot was up.
12:21
MP:
NOT OUT! It was mighty close to a stumping, but the benefit of the doubt goes Agar's way after a multitude of slow-motion replays...
12:18
MP:
APPEAL! NICK? STUMPING? WE'RE GOING UPSTAIRS...
12:17
MP:
Australia 130/9 (37 overs) – CALM – Ashton Agar’s defence holding up just about alright here. Anderson tries the yorker length delivery, Agar blocks well. He’s only on two, but he’s allowed Phil Hughes a little bit more strike and they’ve eked out a partnership worth 13. Ball-by-ball commentary here

Fair point - it would be easy to slaughter the Aussie batting effort here but Anderson's reverse swing is frightening and Swann is getting healthy turn.

Looks like Agar added a lot to this team. Taught them how club cricketers bat!

Australia 117/9 (33.4 overs) – BOOM! Swann appeals time and again – Phil Hughes escapes a close one, then Pattinson survives another. But the third is plumb, and there’s no salvaging it via review. This is very, very ugly for Australia. Pattinson lbw Swann 2(8)  Ball-by-ball commentary here

Pattinson might have been better off sweeping, he's gone!

My lad is currently practicing his sweep shot in the paddling pool with a plastic bat. Must be English, sweeps way too much!
